Program Director(s):
Michael Passeri
Description:
The Valley Hospital in Paramus, New Jersey is offering a one year clinical fellowship in Advance Gastrointestinal Surgery for board eligible surgeons who have completed categorical general surgery training. The fellowship combines exposure in bariatric, complex gastrointestinal and hepatopancreaticobiliary diseases, with exposure in both open and minimally invasive/robotic surgical approaches. In addition to extensive intraoperative exposure, emphasis will also be given to pre- and post-operative decision making and management.
The Valley Program provides a significant clinical experience in:
1) Bariatric surgery, including minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic approaches to gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional bariatric surgery. 2) Robotic and lapaoscopic colorectal surgery for malignant and benign diseases. 3) Esophageal surgery including open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches for hiatal hernia, achalasia, and anti-reflux surgery as well as esophagectomy. 4) Hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery including open, laparoscopic and robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy, distal pancreatic resection, and hepatectomy. 5) Exposure to endoscopic mucosal resection, radiofrequency ablation of Barrett’s esophagus, as well as volumetric laser endomicroscopy. 6) Complex abdominal wall repair including open and minimally invasive/robotic approaches.
It is anticipated that the fellow will participate in approximately 350-450 laparoscopic/robotic and open procedures during this one-year program. Since there are no general surgery residents in this program, the Fellow will have priority in all operative cases.
In addition to the clinical volume, the fellow will have the opportunity to participate in clinical research, as well as teaching conferences. Valley offers a very generous salary/benefit package, as well as support for attendance at a national meeting. Valley Hopsital is a 450-bed acute care hospital located in Bergen County, New Jersey, and represents the second-busiest hospital in the State of New Jersey.
