Description:
Thank you so much for your interest in our program. The MIS fellowship program at the University of Michigan is committed to developing the next generation of clinically excellent, academic surgeons, who will become leaders in our field. We are committed to the quadruple mission of surgery and aim for a well-rounded fellowship year focused on honing clinical skills, academic productivity, educational opportunities, and leadership development. Specifically,
Clinical excellence: The fellow will have a robust and varied clinical experience across a tertiary care hospital, community hospital, and outpatient center. They will be exposed to a range of cases including primary and revisional bariatrics, advanced flexible endoscopy, complex abdominal wall hernia repair, foregut, and general surgery. They will have the opportunity to work with multiple surgeons within the division to enhance the diversity and richness of their clinical experience. The fellow will also have opportunity for independent practice and operative supervision of mid-level residents towards the latter half of the year.
Academic productivity: The University of Michigan is uniquely positioned to train our next generation of academic surgeons regardless of research phenotype. We have the established mentorship, infrastructure, and resources to ensure academic success. For fellows interested in health services research, The Center for Healthcare Outcomes & Policy (CHOP) is a consortium of 120 investigators and staff engaged in population-level health services research. The regular seminars at CHOP will provide the fellow an opportunity to present their research regularly and garner feedback from a diverse group of scientists and clinicians. For those interested in Basic Science and Translational Research, University of Michigan is home to the only two R01 basic science researchers in bariatric surgery, Dr. Randy Sealy and Dr. Robert O’Rourke, both of whom will provide mentorship, lab space and resources. Additionally, for those who have an interest in basic science research outside of bariatric surgery, the University of Michigan houses a basic science collaborative, CBATS (Center for Basic and Translational Science) where they can identify a lab, attain multi-disciplinary mentorship and receive the resources and infrastructure necessary to attain success.
Educational opportunities: The fellow will participate in weekly MIS teaching conferences, as well as monthly multi-disciplinary meetings dedicated to patients with complex hernia, bariatric and foregut conditions. In addition to attendance, the fellow will be expected to teach at several conferences as well as mentor residents and medical students through presentations and in clinical settings. Additionally, the University of Michigan is home to the Center for Surgical Training and Research (CSTAR), an educational research collaborative committed to excellence in education research and development.
Leadership development: We are committed to developing our next generation of MIS academic leaders of all phenotypes. There is a formal Leadership Development Curriculum that will be available for the fellow, as well as mentorship, support, and sponsorship.
