Description:
The Advanced GI/Minimally Invasive and Hernia/Abdominal Wall Surgical Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is designed to give the fellow a broad experience in minimally invasive operations. Our program is a high-volume fellowship program for minimally invasive surgery with 6 clinically busy full time faculty members performing laparoscopic and robotic procedures in bariatric, foregut, abdominal wall surgery, and flexible endoscopy. At the conclusion of the fellowship, the fellow is expected to master gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, revisional bariatric surgery, primary and revisional paraesophageal hernia repair/fundoplication/magnetic sphincter augmentation, inguinal hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction, and ventral hernia repair. Our program was one of the first programs in the country to receive the Fellowship Council's hernia designation, and this certificate will be available to any interested fellows. The fellow will also have significant exposure to advanced interventional endoscopy including POEM, G-POEM, endoluminal vacuum placement, and endoscopic control of leak/fistulas. Transition to practice is a critical component of our fellowship, and there is an emphasis on clinical development and autonomy in the surgical management of complex GI diseases. The fellow is expected to function as a junior faculty member with the designation of Instructor in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. Responsibilities include a complement of GI surgery call (with appropriate backup), clinic, and resident education, both on the wards and in the simulation center. Finally, an abundance of clinical research opportunities is available based on the fellow’s interest.
