Description:

Program Overview

The University of British Columbia (UBC) Complex Gastrointestinal/Hernia and Abdominal wall reconstruction fellowship is a dual designation, one-year clinical training program. This fellowship is designed for surgeons seeking advanced MIS and robotic training in a high-volume, academically rigorous environment with a strong emphasis on innovation, research, and surgical excellence.

 

Fellows will gain extensive hands-on experience in:

  • Colorectal oncology 
  • Gastric oncology
  • Complex hernia repair (including robotic abdominal wall reconstruction)
  • Foregut/antireflux surgery
  • Solid organ surgery

 

The program also provides optional training in flexible endoscopy, allowing fellows to customize their experience. Bariatric surgery is not currently included in the curriculum.

 

Robotic Surgery Training

A key highlight of this fellowship is training in robotic-assisted surgery, with access to the Da Vinci Xi platform. Fellows will develop proficiency in:

  • Robotic techniques for hernia repair and other procedures
  • Console skills and operative efficiency
  • Integration of robotics into complex MIS cases

 

The Fellowship is affiliated with the VGH Simulation Centre.  VGH Sim is an internationally recognized, state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary academic centre. It is actively involved in the education of surgeons, trainees, and nurses with high fidelity simulators, computer software, and wet/dry lab facilities.

 

Research and Academic Opportunities

Research is a cornerstone of this fellowship, with ample opportunities to engage in clinical research projects. Fellows are expected to present at national or international conferences and complete at least one manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Examinations and Certifications:

    Applicants must have passed the USMLE/COMLEX Step 1 & 2 exams or the Medical Council of Canada Evaluation Exam (MCCEE)
    Applicants must have passed the TOEFEL exam
    Applicants must have had at least 2 years of prior training in an ACGME accredited residency or fellowship (or Canadian equivalent)
    Applicants who are ABS or Canadian Board Eligible or Certified

Candidates must be eligible for a medical License in British Columbia, Canada.

Clinical Outpatient Experience

The Fellow is expected to attend outpatient clinics on a regular basis so that continuity of care is established.

Clinical offices are located next to the hospital so that the Fellow can attend clinics and be closely involved in pre-op and post-op care.

 

 

Research/Scholarship Resources

The Fellow has access to CESEI and the Jack Bell Animal Lab to conduct research. CESEI is a simulation facility with dry lab and wet lab facilities. There are also staff at CESEI available to assist with research projects.
