The Fellowship in Bariatric and Metabolic surgery at Laval University is based at the Quebec Heart and Lung Institute in Quebec City. This clinical fellowship is designed to train academic surgeons in the field of bariatric and metabolic surgery. This tertiary care center is specialized in metabolic surgery (Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch) but also offers exposure to other bariatric pocedures including Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric Bypass and revisional surgery. The fellowship takes place in a French-speaking milieu and fluency in French is required. The fellow is integrated in a team of eight surgeons performing more than 800 bariatric cases annually and an additional 200 laparoscopic upper and lower GI cases. The fellow is implicated into the surgical program, which involves an integrative pre-operative evaluation, management of the surgical floor, short and long-term outpatient follow-up and endoscopic unit. Multiple opportunities are available to join or to initiate research projects, based on our prospective electronic database maintained over the last 25 years and with the support of our research Chair in Bariatric and Metabolic surgery. The candidate is expected to complete at least one project suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Additional funding is availabale for presentation of research project and attendance at a National/International bariatric meeting. Opportunity also exists to obtain a Master Degree through a second year of clinical research. We accept one candidate each year from the Fellowship Council Match and one candidate outside fellowship council.

Clinical Outpatient Experience
The fellow will attend the bariatric clinic one to two days per week. There is typically 5 to 6 new surgical candidates and 15 to 20 post-bariatric surgery patients, per day. He will be conducting pre-operative evaluation, selection of the bariatric procedure, short-term follow-up, including consultations at the emergencies and long-term follow-up. A population of +7000 patients operated over the last 25 years is being followed.
We accept one fellow from the Fellowship Council Match, starting August 1st and one fellow outside fellowship match.
Clinical exposure (OR time, outpatient clinics, endoscopy) is shared evenly between the two fellows.
Research/Scholarship Resources
The fellow is expected to submit at least one research project to a national or international meeting, with publication of his/her research work in a peer-reviewd journal. A research project and mentor is identified at the beginning of the fellowship year. The Department holds a Research Chair in Bariatric surgery and multiple research opportunities are offered, as well as support from research assistant and biostatistician. There is a possibility to pursue a second year of training to obtain a Master Degree from Laval University.
